Louise Madden – Chief Executive Officer
Louise joined H.E.L Group from Applied Photophysics where she was CEO, having also held positions as Chief Operating Officer and Commercial Director. Her experience within the analytical instruments field spans more than a decade. Her prior roles include Global Service Manager at Biolin Scientific AB, and Finance Director at Farfield Group Limited. With a BA in Law and Accountancy from the University of Manchester, Louise spent 11 years at KPMG, where her clients ranged from owner-managed businesses to multi-national PLCs. During this time, Louise also gained extensive experience of mergers and acquisitions.
Paul Sturgeon – Chief Finance Officer
Paul has gained wide business experience after starting his career as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse. Since then has held CFO positions at organizations ranging from pre-revenue start-ups to established, multinational private equity-backed businesses. Most recently prior to H.E.L Group, Paul was with the start-up Double Wing Pharma, before which he spent several years with Lighter Life. He has also held a number of financial leadership positions at Betts Group.
Paul Orange Ph.D. – Chief Commercial Officer
With over 20 years’ experience in R&D and commercial roles at life science organizations, Paul joined H.E.L Group from GE Healthcare Life Sciences. At GE, Paul led regional marketing teams around the world and drove a major e-commerce project for the multinational company. Paul has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Sheffield, and has performed research at Manchester University, Amersham Pharmacia Biotech and NextGen Sciences. He has also worked in sales, marketing and business development roles at PerkinElmer, including time spent living in China, with sales leadership responsibilities for the APAC region. Paul was H.E.L’s Chief Marketing Officer for almost two years before taking on the CCO position.
Mark Appleton Ph.D. – Director of Product Development
Mark joined H.E.L Group in 1991 after completing a Ph.D. at Imperial College London. In his current role, Mark leads the development team and oversees all aspects of product design and development with strong links into the production and service teams. During his 29 year tenure at H.E.L Group, Mark has been instrumental in the development of almost all of the Company’s products and services, focusing much of his efforts on converting the needs of customers into a pipeline of commercial products.
Tony Heywood – Production Manager
Tony joined H.E.L Group with 25 years of experience in of cross-sector leadership roles. This includes management roles with global Electronics Manufacturing businesses, such as Eaton. As well as roles in production leadership, he has delivered many successful Lean and Six Sigma projects, with a strong focus on continuous improvement, including time working for Visa Europe. Tony is focused on driving improved operational efficiency within H.E.L Group, ensuring customers can be better served and staff continually developed.
Roy started his career in process optimization and scale-up 30 years ago as a Senior Development Chemist at Thermo Fisher Scientific. He has spent over 20 years as an integral part of the H.E.L team, overseeing the manufacturing process for H.E.L Group’s wide range of laboratory instruments and tools. With over 10 years’ experience as Production Manager, Roy has recently taken on the leadership of the Company’s Global Quality function, with a clear focus on continuous improvement of H.E.L’s products and services.
Gerard (Ged) Gardner Ph.D. – Sales Director
Ged has over 20 years’ experience in senior commercial roles within the chemical, drug discovery and biotechnology sectors. Following post-doctoral research work, Ged moved to CyBio, where over an 11-year period, he rose to become the Worldwide Sales Director, focusing on capital equipment sales. Since mid-2010, Ged has held commercial leadership roles at H.E.L Group, where he has overseen the evolution of the sales team. Ged has been a key player in H.E.L Group’s move into supplying bioprocessing equipment and building a customer base in that market.
Qing (Steven) Chen – General Manager, Greater China
Steven is an experienced commercial GM for scientific instrumentation companies. Steven joined H.E.L Group with over 20 years’ experience in senior management, including GM roles in the Chinese divisions of Bruker Optics and Nanophoton Corporation. Prior to these appointments, Steven held the position of Greater China President during a 10-year tenure with PerkinElmer, where he took the leading role in business strategy implementation and P&L responsibility for the area. As well as leading the team in China, Steven is overseeing H.E.L Group’s transition to a wholly foreign-owned entity (WFOE) in China.
Mert Sahin Ph.D. – General Manager and Senior Vice President of North American Operations
Mert has a background in commercial leadership across the Life Sciences industry. He joins H.E.L from GE Healthcare where he held senior executive roles, most recently as Chief Marketing Officer for GE’s Medical Imaging business. During his time at GE, he held various roles across EMEA & North America within Healthcare, in particular Pharmaceuticals. Bioprocess and Medical Devices. Prior to GE, he held roles in the Life Sciences and Diagnostics industries. Originally from Turkey, Mert completed his Ph.D. at the University of Hamburg, Germany.
Oh Chee Keat (Brice Oh) – Sales Director, Asia-Pacific
Based in Singapore, Brice joins H.E.L with over 12 years of product management and business development experience in the Asian market. At Fedegari Asia Laboratory Division, he successfully oversaw the company’s breakthrough sale and ongoing growth in the Taiwanese market while driving an increase in distributor sales in India by 500%. Brice’s previous roles have included at Quantachrome Instruments (acquired by Anton Paar), where he was Asia-Pacific Regional Sales Manager and, prior to that, as its Technical Sales Manager for the region. During his time at ITS Science & Medical, Brice held Product and Commercial roles and earned several sales and managerial accolades.
