SUMMARY:SBFC 2025
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 47th Symposium on Biomaterials\, Fuels and Chemicals in Milwaukee\, WI!\nWe look forward to wide-ranging discussions\, presentations on the latest research breakthroughs\, and connecting with colleagues old and new in the beautiful backdrop of the historic Pfister hotel. \nThis year’s program features 15 technical sessions spanning cellular and process engineering\, feedstock utilization and design\, and biomaterials. We are particularly excited to introduce a new session on synthetic biology for space exploration\, as well as a special session that highlights the many past\, present and future contributions of midwestern companies to the bioeconomy\, in celebration of the conference’s location. These will be joined by the latest advances in metabolic engineering\, valorization of low-cost feedstocks\, deconstruction of plastics\, single-carbon metabolism\, bioenergy crop development\, lignocellulose breakdown\, and more. Tying everything together will be our keynote speaker\, Prof. Michelle O’Malley\, whose work spans all of the central themes of SBFC and whose new NSF-funded anaerobic foundry will provide exciting opportunities for collaboration throughout the SBFC community. \nAs always\, SBFC provides an excellent opportunity for the next generation of researchers to share their work\, with dedicated sessions for student talks and rapid-fire poster pitches\, in addition to our poster sessions. For many students\, SBFC is their first conference\, and we pride ourselves on fostering a welcoming environment\, as well as opportunities for interactions with prospective future employers. \nPutting together this meeting takes a lot of effort\, and we are incredibly grateful for the hard work of our topic area committees and session conveners. Special thanks go to the SIMB staff\, in particular Haley Cox and Tina Hockaday\, for all they do for this meeting and the other SIMB events. \nWe hope you have a great meeting and enjoy your time in Milwaukee. There is plenty to do here\, from sampling the produce from renowned local breweries\, to the Harley-Davison museum. Welcome! \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Advanced process designs for intensified conversion of CO2 to bioproducts
DESCRIPTION:Single-carbon and gaseous fermentation feedstocks have the potential to revolutionize biomanufacturing. Their low cost and availability from diverse sources—including anaerobic digestion\, ethanol fermentation\, industrial off-gases\, biomass gasification\, and electrochemical CO₂ reduction— make them attractive for sustainable production. \nHowever\, achieving industrial-scale bioconversion of these feedstocks presents significant challenges\, particularly in: \n\nGas-to-liquid mass transfer: Ensuring sufficient delivery of carbon sources\, oxygen\, and electron acceptors to the biocatalyst.\nOptimizing gas partial pressures: Maintaining biologically favorable conditions for microbial growth and conversion.\n\nTo address these challenges\, researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Advanced Biofuels Process Development Unit (ABPDU) have developed multiplexed gas fermentation bioreactor systems with: \n✔ Active backpressure control to enhance mass transfer efficiency.\n✔ Feedback-based gas supply for optimized feedstock delivery.\n✔ Continuous off-gas analysis to enable complete mass balance closure. \nWhat You’ll Learn: \n✅ Key successes in CO₂ conversion and their implications for industrial-scale gas fermentation. \n✅ Breakthrough applications\, including: \n\nDirect biological uptake of atmospheric CO₂ by engineered Cupriavidus necator.\nEfficient co-conversion of mixed C1 substrates.\nDirect aerobic conversion of carbon monoxide to biofuel precursors in Hydrogenophaga pseudoflava.\n\n✅ How ABPDU serves as a federally funded testbed for accelerating C1 biomanufacturing technologies. \nJoin us to explore the latest advancements in integrated gas fermentation process development and discover how these innovations are shaping the future of sustainable biomanufacturing. \nRegister Now
