The Biotage® Endeavor™ has been discontinued. If you run one, the question is no longer how it compares — it is what replaces it, and whether you take the chance to lift the limits you have been working around. Why replace your Endeavor

No new units are made

The Endeavor is discontinued. Spares, service and software support can only reduce from here, and an unsupported high-pressure instrument is hard to justify in a safety review.

Only Biotage makes the liners

Biotage’s own FAQ says the glass liners are “custom made for Biotage” — you cannot buy them anywhere else. On an instrument that is no longer made, that means when the liners run out, the instrument stops.

The limits cannot be raised

7 mL, 40 bar, no sampling and no cooling are built into the design. They are not settings you can turn up, and no upgrade raises them — so chemistry that outgrows them has to move to another instrument.

Two rows are worth reading honestly. On gas feed control Endeavor already regulates each vessel individually, which puts it level with ChemSCAN+ and ahead of SA and ChemSCAN. On temperature both reach 200 °C. The case for replacing it rests on scale, pressure, sampling, cooling and materials — not on every line of the table.

What you gain

From 7 mL to 400 mL

Endeavor tops out at 7 mL. ChemSCAN+ runs 2 – 400 mL on one platform, so conditions found at screening scale are confirmed at working scale without changing instrument.

40 bar becomes 200 bar

Endeavor’s relief valve releases at 40 bar. ChemSCAN+ runs to 100 bar as standard and 200 bar as an option — where much hydrogenation and carbonylation chemistry actually sits.

Sampling during the run

Endeavor has no sampling — you infer progress from gas uptake, or quench reactors at staggered times to imitate a time course. ChemSCAN vessels take a sampling port, so one experiment gives a real profile.

Cooling, not just heating

Endeavor has no active cooling; 200 °C to ambient is a couple of hours of passive decay. ChemSCAN reaches −40 °C with a circulator and controls the descent.

Hastelloy, not sole-source glass

ChemSCAN uses SS316 or Hastelloy C276 vessels rated to 200 bar and 350 °C — so corrosive and halide chemistry is in scope, and the consumable is not tied to one supplier.

Biotage Endeavor: frequently asked questions

Is the Biotage Endeavor discontinued?
Yes. The Biotage® Endeavor™ Catalyst Screening System is no longer sold as a new instrument. Existing units continue to run, but spares, service and the glass liners are worth confirming with Biotage before you plan around the platform long term.
What replaces the Biotage Endeavor?
The H.E.L ChemSCAN family is the closest direct replacement: parallel high-pressure reactors with real-time gas-uptake measurement, in 4- and 8-zone configurations. ChemSCAN+ is the nearest like-for-like, because it gives every reactor its own automated gas feed, as the Endeavor did. ChemSCAN and ChemSCAN SA cover the same workflow at lower levels of automation.
What is the maximum pressure of the Biotage Endeavor?
40 bar (600 psi). Biotage’s documentation states the pressure relief valve releases above 600 psi, and that supply gases should not exceed that figure. ChemSCAN runs to 100 bar as standard and 200 bar as an option.
What working volume does the Biotage Endeavor handle?
1 – 7 mL with the anchor impeller, or 1 – 5 mL with the blade type, depending on impeller and solvent viscosity. ChemSCAN covers 2 – 400 mL across vessels from 16 mL to 500 mL, so screening and scale-up happen on one platform.
How many reactors does the Biotage Endeavor have?
Eight, each physically separate with its own thermocouple, heater, pressure transducer and gas valve, and you only program the reactors you want to run. ChemSCAN offers 4- or 8-zone configurations with the same independence.
Can you take samples during a reaction on the Endeavor?
No. Biotage’s FAQ states there is no sampling — you monitor gas consumption to tell whether the reaction is working, or set reactors up identically and quench them at different times to imitate a time course. ChemSCAN vessels take a sampling port, so a single run gives a real profile.
Does the Biotage Endeavor have cooling?
No active cooling. It relies on small volume against a large steel reactor mass, and cooling from 200 °C to ambient takes a couple of hours passively. ChemSCAN reaches −40 °C with a circulator and controls the rate of descent.
Are Biotage Endeavor glass liners still available?
The liners are custom made for Biotage rather than a standard catalogue item, so they are a single-source consumable. On a platform that is no longer sold, that is worth checking before committing further work to the instrument. ChemSCAN uses SS316 or Hastelloy C276 vessels rated to 200 bar and 350 °C.
What is the difference between the Biotage Endeavor and ChemSCAN+?
Scale, pressure, sampling, cooling and vessel materials. Endeavor tops out at 7 mL and 40 bar with no sampling and no active cooling; ChemSCAN+ runs 2 – 400 mL to 200 bar, takes a sampling port, and cools to −40 °C. On gas control they are comparable — both feed each reactor independently.
Is the ChemSCAN a like-for-like Endeavor alternative?
